«Middlemarch» es la historia de tres parejas sujetas a los frágiles hilos del saber y del error, entretejida con la crónica minuciosa de los destinos de toda una comunidad en una época de cambios y reacción. Quintaesencia de la novela victoriana, George Eliot marcó con «Middlemarch» un hito en la literatura universal. Mary Ann Evans, George Eliot para la historia de la literatura, nació en 1819 en Chilberts Coton (Warwickshire). Educada en el rigor de la religión, a los diecisiete años se declaró agnóstica. Fue subdirectora de la revista Westminster Review, el foro intelectual progresista más importante de su tiempo. Sus primeras novelas carecen del realismo con fuerte base intelectual que caracterizan «Felix Holt» (1886) «Daniel Deronda» (1876) y «Middelmarch» (1871-1872), su novela más importante. Murió en Londres en 1880.
